Tartan Fly Plaids

A fly plaid is a small piece of tartan, pinned at the shoulder and worn over a kilt jacket. Most grooms wear a Scottish fly plaid on their wedding day because it gives the ideal look. Our fly plaids are finished with a plain and purled fringed edges along the border, giving it the traditional and handwoven look. You won't see this worn on a normal day usually. The fly plaid tartan started as part of military ceremonial dress. It was worn as part of formal Highland dress and military uniform long ago. Today, it is the first choice for weddings and other formal events.  

People sometimes mix up this garment, a shoulder plaid, and a sash. This piece is pinned at the shoulder and hangs down the back in pleats. A shoulder plaid is looser and drapes across the body without being pinned in the same way. A sash sits across the chest and is usually worn by women rather than men. For a wedding, this garment is the correct choice, worn with a kilt jacket.
